5 Step Puppy Plan

A dog can be a terrific addition to a family. Taking a moment to be sure that is the right time to own a pet and to choose the right breed for you and your family will insure years of happiness and fun with your new family member.

Step 1 - The Decision

You may have already decided to buy a puppy. For both of your sakes, let's be sure!

A puppy does not stay a puppy. Consider the size that your puppy will be when it is full grown.
Space, space, space. A dog needs space and exercise! Each dog's needs are different; be sure to be prepared for yours.
Playtime! All dogs need plenty of love and attention. Does your family have the time to give?
Cost! The average cost of ownership for a puppy's first year is over $600.00.

Step 2 - The Search, You Choose

The Humane Society. There are millions of living pets put to sleep each year in our nation's shelters. Consider giving a home to a forgotten friend.
A Reputable Breeder. Once you have chosen a breed you prefer, a breeder can be an excellent source of information about the breed. Visit their facility, check references and ask questions. Ask your veterinarian for recommendations on breeders, call the APA's Breeder Referral Department or visit the APA Breeder Gallery On-line.

Step 3- Prepare Your Home and Choose a Veterinarian.
Here are some guidelines:

Where will he/she sleep and what areas of the house/yard will be accessible?
Prepare your children for having a pet. Teach them how to hold, play, feed, walk and talk to the new puppy.
Have a bed, toys and plenty of newspapers. Remove anything from the puppy's area that you don't want chewed!
Choose your veterinarian. Your puppy will need veterinary care right away and throughout its life. Use the APA's
Vet Finder service to find a vet to suit your needs.
REMEMBER - Spay or neuter at the right time!

Step 4 - Begin Training

The first year is the most important time to be sure that your puppy will be a favorable addition to your family. Train consistently and in a positive way. An ill-mannered pet is the fault of the owner! Consider professional training when the pet is ready.

Step 5 - Every Day

Be prepared for your pet's daily needs.
Proper nutrition and fresh water.
Plenty of exercise.
Bathing, grooming and regular veterinary care.
Proper identification. 94% of all pets become lost at least twice during their lifetime. The American Pet Association's Guardian programs are the best way to protect your pet from theft and permanent loss.
Last, but not least, lots of love and attention!
