Pet Myths

Myth: If I find a pet running free it must be unwanted .

Fact: Although many pet owners VERY WRONGLY let their pets run free, some pets, because of their cunning, find a way to get free. You should call the local humane agency to report the found pet, put up posters and check the lost pet ads in the local papers. Look for an APA tattoo on the inner right thigh in case the pet is registered with us (see Guardian VIP). Remember, there is probably a heart broken pet owner out there.

Myth: Animals that are neutered or spayed gain weight.

Fact: Spaying and neutering does not cause your pet to become overweight. Being overweight is directly related to food intake and exercise. An animal’s diet should be adjusted throughout its life to change with its age, activity and lifestyle. Be aware when your lifestyle changes how it affects your pet.

Myth: Cats can not be taught to walk on leash.

Fact: Most cats can easily be trained to walk on a leash. Because of the natural inquisitive nature of cats, a long walk can be quite enjoyable. Keep the cat clear of trees that it may climb and get tangled in.

Myth: Cats will always land on their feet.

Fact: Cats instinctively control their fall and have an uncanny ability to land feet first. However, there are many factors with a fall and a cat should never be "tested" or allowed to climb in high places.

Myth: Cats should drink milk.

Fact: Most cats like milk, but don’t need it if they are receiving a proper diet. In fact, most adult cats are lactose intolerant and it will cause diarrhea. Cream can be a good substitute as an occasional treat.

Myth: Cats cannot get rabies.

Myth: My dog can be tied in my yard until I get a fence.

Fact: Tying a dog can cause aggressive behavior and is inhumane. If you can not afford the time to take your dog for long walks or to have a proper containment system, you should wait until you can before owning a dog.

Myth: If a dog's nose is cold, it is healthy.

Fact: A dog's nose is only cold because of the evaporation of the moisture put there by the dog's licking. A dog could have any number of illnesses and still have a cold nose.

Myth: Dogs should be given bones to be healthy.

Fact: With proper nutrition a dog has no nutritional needs from bones. Chicken and pork bones easily splinter and can be very dangerous. Beef bones are safer, and can help clean teeth, but care should still be taken as they too can splinter and cause choking. If you do give beef bones, do so only when you can supervise the pet.

Myth: Bad breath is normal for all dogs.

Fact: Unpleasant breath can be normal but "bad" breath can be a sign of dental problems. Ask you vet to look at your dog's teeth regularly and follow a dental plan for your pet.
